Welcome to the Red Dog Forge.

My name is Shane Stainton, I'm a blacksmith and blade smith living and working in a small studio in upstate New York, just inside the Adirondack State park.

I strive to continue the smithing tradition as it was found in the mid eighteenth century, a time when the smith relied on the craft in their hands and heart. All of my work is done using a coal fired forge and hammmered by hand.

All my knives are forged closely to shape in a coal forge, profiled with files, and finished with stones and paper before being fitted with handles bolsters and whatnot.
All the sheath work is also done by myself and unless stated otherwise is done with veg tanned leather and stitched and tooled by hand.
The steels commonly used are 5160 and 1095 spring steels quenched in oil. I use an over all quench to harden and differential temper in the forge along the spine of each blade to offer superior flexibility with a minimum loss of edge hardeness.
